Riverstone Lodge
A warm, relaxed base in Tūrangi for travellers exploring the Tongariro region. There are comfortable private and shared rooms, generous communal facilities you can genuinely spread out in, and easy access to the town and to the rivers, trails and mountains that surround it.

Rooms for every kind of traveller
Riverstone Lodge offers a mixture of private and shared rooms, which means solo travellers, couples, groups of friends, families, hikers and anglers all find something that suits the way they are travelling. Nothing here is dressed up as more than it is: the rooms are clean, warm and thoughtfully arranged, with carpet underfoot and a restful atmosphere at the end of a long day outdoors.
Choose an ensuite queen room if you want your own bathroom, a shared-bathroom room if you would rather keep things simple, or a bed in the five-bed dormitory if you are moving quickly through the region and only need somewhere comfortable to sleep. Heating runs throughout the property, family rooms are part of the mix, and every room is non-smoking.

- Single Room with Shared Bathroom
- A compact private room built around one bed, well suited to anglers, walkers and cyclists travelling on their own.
- Quadruple Room with Shared Bathroom
- Room for four in one space, which works well for families and for groups of friends heading out together in the morning.
- Economy Quadruple Room with Shared Bathroom
- The simpler four-bed arrangement, kept warm, clean and practical for travellers who spend most of the day out of the room.
- Bed in 5-Bed Dormitory Room

Room details, current availability and booking conditions are all handled by our booking provider, so the list above is here to help you work out which arrangement fits your trip before you check dates.

Space to cook, dry out and stretch your legs
The shared kitchen is one of the most useful things about staying here. There is real room to cook a proper meal, pack lunches for the next day on the trail and sit down together afterwards without queueing for a bench or a burner. For anyone travelling for a week or more, that alone changes how the trip feels, because you are not eating out every night and you are not living out of a pack.
Beyond the kitchen there is a shared lounge with a TV, a dining area with plenty of seating, a terrace, a sun deck and a garden with outdoor furniture and BBQ facilities. On a fine evening most people drift outside with something cooking. When the weather turns, and in this part of the country it does, the lounge takes over: board games and puzzles are on hand, the heating is on, and there is ski storage for winter gear so wet equipment stays out of the bedrooms.

Practical things, handled
Free WiFi reaches the whole property, private parking on site is free and needs no reservation, and there is street parking and accessible parking as well. The lodge has facilities for disabled guests, and heating throughout for the colder months.
A shuttle service, bicycle rental, grocery deliveries, baggage storage and laundry are listed as additional-charge services rather than included ones. If any of those matter to your plans, please confirm the details with the property before you arrive so nothing is left to chance.

An outdoor base in the middle of Tongariro country
Tūrangi sits between the Tongariro River and the mountains of Tongariro National Park, at the southern end of the Lake Taupō region. Guests come here to fish, hike, cycle, ski, canoe and walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and the lodge is set up around that rhythm of early starts, wet gear, big appetites and a warm room to come back to.
Horseback riding is available off-site for an additional charge, bicycle rental can be arranged for an additional charge, and there is a golf course within two miles. These are independent local activities rather than services run by the lodge, so transport, guiding and equipment are arranged separately and are not part of your room booking. What the lodge does provide is the practical side: somewhere to store skis, room to sort gear, a kitchen to prepare food for the day ahead and a bed that makes an early start possible.

Reading up before you come
Both of these are external destination resources published by regional tourism and the Department of Conservation. They are the best places to check track conditions, seasonal alerts and what is open before you plan a day out.

Hosted with care, kept genuinely clean, and quiet enough to plan tomorrow properly
What guests tend to remember about Riverstone Lodge is the way they are looked after. Sandra hosts with a personal, unhurried style: she will tell you which river access is worth the drive, when to set off for the Crossing, where to pick up supplies in town, and what to do if the weather closes in on the day you had planned to be up on the mountain.
That kind of local knowledge is difficult to find online, and it usually turns a good few days in the region into a much better one. Ask before you head out, and you will leave with a better plan than the one you arrived with.
The lodge has a strong reputation for cleanliness, and it shows in the everyday details: tidy bathrooms, an orderly kitchen and common areas that stay comfortable even when the lodge is full. The spacious shared kitchen naturally becomes the place where people talk about where they have been and where they are going next.
It is a friendly, relaxed community rather than a party hostel. People arrive tired from the trail or the river, cook, swap directions and turn in early, because most of them are heading out again in the morning. Evenings here are sociable but calm, and the rooms stay quiet.

Planning your stay
A few practical details worth knowing before you arrive, so the first hour at the lodge is straightforward and you can get on with the reason you came. Current rates, availability and booking conditions are handled by our booking provider.
- Arrival
- Check-in runs from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Please let us know your expected arrival time in advance so somebody is here to meet you and show you around the lodge, especially if you are driving in late after a long day on the road.
- Departure
- Check-out is until 10:00 AM. If you are heading straight out for a walk or a morning on the river, it helps to pack the night before and leave the room clear in good time.
- Children and families
- Children of all ages are welcome, and family rooms are part of the room mix. Children aged six and above are charged as adults according to the property information provided to our booking provider.
- Age requirement
- There is no age requirement for check-in, so travellers of any age can book and stay here.
- Pets

- Payment
- Visa, Mastercard and cash are all accepted at the property, so you can settle up in whichever way suits you best.
- Parking
- Free private parking is available on site and no reservation is required. Street parking and accessible parking are available as well, which makes arriving with bikes, skis or fishing gear straightforward.
